In Canada, the Jian Ghomeshi Scandal has been huge in the news. This blog was sent to me by a friend to post on our SAFE International website.
We often hear about powerful individuals getting away easily with harassment and abuse. CBC host and poster boy Jian Ghomeshi is the latest name to be added to the list of individuals who attempt to use their power to get away with this kind of deplorable behavior.
Jian Ghomeshi’s successful show, popularity and high ratings made him a powerful man at the CBC. Up until recently the network administration opted to turn a blind eye to what was clearly a pattern of abuse of women both at work and in his private life. I am sure that the administration, contrary to their claims, was perfectly aware of Jian’s abuse and harassment of women. I personally know a few people who completed internships at the CBC in the summer of 2014 (2 years ago) back when Jian’s dark side was common gossip widely circulated around the office water cooler. It is obvious that the only reason the CBC chose pull the plug on Ghomeshi was because his behaviour was about to become public knowledge.
Getting repeatedly grabbed, leered at or subjected to sexual violence or innuendo at work or anywhere else is never acceptable. If Ghomeshi had been investigated and held accountable years ago, many of his victims would have been spared his assault. Perhaps the coming forth of some of Ghomeshi’s past victims will encourage current and future victims of sexual harassment or abuse to speak up and not be intimidated into silence. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking.
