Weapons Self Defense

Weapons Self Defense

The cheapest, easiest to acquire and most common weapon used in violence is the knife and other forms of edged weapons. More dangerous than and twice as treacherous as a gun at close range, the knife is by far one of the deadliest tools used in violent confrontations and can be found in every single kitchen household

The SAFE International™ Edged Weapons course extensively covers the psychology behind an edged attack, the recognition of behavioural patterns, body language, how to evade and escape as well as dozens of drills to improve your close quarter arsenal against an armed attacker.

Topics covered include static and dynamic attacks, attacks from the front and rear, controlling the weapon hand, dealing with the dreaded rear handed pump and stab while being grabbed by the lead hand, how to increase perception time while decreasing reaction time, how to use functional gross motor skills during the adrenal stress conditions phase, overkill mentality, as well as performance enhancement and survival strategies successfully used by security personnel, bouncers, law enforcement officers and soldiers worldwide.

That said, there is absolutely no guarantee nor is any self defense system fool or variable proof as there are way too many factors to determine absolute success, or in this case, survival. Anyone telling you different is full of shit and desperately trying to sell you something.

What this and all our modules offer is a differing paradigm along with functional and easily adaptable concepts, attributes and skills to enhance yourcanstockphoto54324624 survivability in a knife attack, not guarantee it. There are no techniques to memorize, no frills, just plain truth on defensive edged weapon attacks.

As with all of our courses, the concepts taught are basic, but highly effective in the event that one can’t avoid confrontation.  Knife attacks are particularly frightening to people which is why we stay away from much of the fancy techniques others teach.  There are no set moves that will protect you against a knife wielding attacker.

Scenario Replication Training One of the missing links in most self defense training is the opportunity to do drills in which scenarios are replicated to be as realistic as possible.  The benefit of this kind of training is immeasurable because it allows the client to experience the stress and adrenaline rush that one will encounter.  The combination of realistic verbal attacks with the aggression of a real attack can be addressed with our course.  The reason we are able to offer this kind of training is because we utilize Spartan Training Gear which allows the client to really practise what they have learned, as well as be able to experience being attacked in a more realistic manner.  We can do drills in specific scenarios like the home, the car, out on the street without being limited by a lack of any protective gear.  It also allows the training environment to be a safe one which is always a priority with our courses.

Women's Self Defense Classes

Women's Self Defense Classes

Self Defense is “True” Life Insurance

Did you know that in North America 1 in 4 women will be sexually assaulted during their lifetime?

But where do most people put their priority? Most people will make safety a priority when it comes to learning lifeskills like how to drive or to swim. And most will insure their “things” like their homes, their cars, or their possessions, but arguably, few take the time to insure what matters most, “their lives while they are living”.  I am not suggesting that each of these things is not important, but it seems to me that living a life where you can increase the chances of living violent free by learning self-defense would be just as important!  Many also commonly adopt traits like apathy and denial believing they will never fall victim to violence, but if it does happen they freeze thinking, "I can't believe this is happening to me", leaving that hesitation on how to handle it.   If you ask me, Self Defense is “True” Life Insurance! So first off, thank you for obviously recognizing this since you are here checking out our website.

womenWell, the good news is SAFE International™ are the experts in the area of self-defense, violence prevention and personal protection, having taught more than 200,000 women since 1994! We can help bring you Peace of Mind in a relatively short number of hours, not weeks or years.  So whether you are looking for lessons for yourself, your family, or your friends, we have some solutions. At first, many are intimidated by the thoughts of learning self defense for a number of reasons including a few misconceptions such as, “It takes years to learn self defense”, “You have to be in excellent physical shape to participate in self defense”, “You have to join a martial arts club to learn self defense”, or “Self defense is about learning how to fight!”.   All of these are misconceptions that are just not accurate or true.  Let’s look at a couple of them;

“It takes years to learn self-defense” -  now I would be lying if I did not admit that, like anything, the more time you can put into it, the better you become, but one of the unique aspects of SAFE International™ is that our programs have been designed for the on-the-go businesswoman or busy stay-at-home mom” taking into  consideration the fact that most people, if they take any kind of self-defense course will most likely only take one course EVER in their lifetime.  Knowing this fact, we have designed a program that gives you the tools to address violence prevention from the earliest stages of recognizing it to avoid, or how to deal with it through practical, effective and memorable verbal and physical concepts and principles all tailored to your lifestyle and the areas you are most likely to encounter conflict or confrontation.

“You have to be in excellent physical shape to learn self-defense” -  Sure, being in excellent physical shape may help one in regards to physical self-defense, but more important than any physical abilities are one's mental abilities or mindset in regards to violence prevention.  See one may be in amazing physical shape but of much more importance is knowing who and what you are defending yourself for, having the reasons to defend yourself are critical and we can help you establish those reasons first and foremost.   Without an effective mindset, the physical abilities are limited.  Your mind guides your body, so we start with the mind.

“Self Defense is about learning how to fight!”– Any self-defense program that begins with the physical side of self-defense is in my opinion, “negligent”.  Pure and Applied, or true self-defense begins with learning how to recognize and avoid violence before all else.  If that fails, one needs to understand and learn other strategies mentioned further down to deal with the potential violence.  Lastly, we address how to physically defend oneself if all other avenues of avoidance have been exhausted.  Self-defense is not about learning how to fight, but rather how to avoid a fight through all means possible.

“You have to join a martial arts club to learn self-defense” – Great news, no you don’t! SAFE International™ is a mobile self-defense business that teaches in schools, people’s homes, corporate offices, even outdoors when the weather is nice.  And if you don’t have a location, we have many contacts throughout the province where we may be able to arrange the training. One of the topics we discuss is how martial arts is not self-defense.  Martial Arts are as the name says, “An Art”.  There is no art in violence which we discuss in detail because if one brings the tools they have learned in any of the martial arts to the arena of violence, they will not be prepared.

Experience our simulated attacks in scenario-specific situations such as at the front door, being followed, walking at night to the car, and more.

The women we have taught, in many ways, have helped shape the course for SAFE International™ by sharing their stories of tragedy and success.

Years ago, Chris Roberts, Managing Director of SAFE International™ was invited to be the keynote speaker at the Annual Ontario Block Parents Convention. There were approximately 100 people in attendance with the majority being women.  Included in that total was about 25 police officers.  In Chris' words, "I began my talk on how to avoid and handle potentially dangerous situations such as being followed, elevator safety, parking lots, plus much more. I noticed the women were laughing and engaged while about 20 of the male police officers sat there with their arms crossed staring at me with serious looks on their faces.  I was thinking this might not beSD Party 3 going so well even though all the women were very involved and listening. At this point, the senior police officer in the group stood up and asked if he could say something. I remember thinking,“Well, this is probably the end of my business. He is going to tell me not to make a joke out of personal safety.” In fact, he told the group that this was the best approach to personal safety he had ever seen! I spoke to him after and told him how he had scared the life out of me. He said that as a police officer, he was sitting listening to the information and not focusing on the humour. He agreed that my use of humour was a unique way to get the message across.  That was all I needed to hear and the use of humour in my presentations became a mainstay of the program."

Maybe the best proof I had that the use of humour was an effective and unique way to teach self defense was when I had a woman who managed a home for abused women came out to watch one of my seminars at a local high school. After the course, she approached me about doing a seminar at her shelter. I expressed my concern about teaching with humour and how would it go over in an intense setting like that. She said, “Chris, I have never known anyone to get upset because you made them laugh. I noticed that you make the topic fun to learn and you are not making fun of the topic.” That sealed it. It confirmed to me that I had found the perfect way to teach the topic of self defense.  Now don't get me wrong, I take the topic of violence prevention very seriously, but the use of humour has become a very valuable tool in how we reach people, making the learning environment an optimal one to share, learn, and grow from the education.

Indigenous Peoples Self Defense Classes

Indigenous Peoples Self Defense Classes

The SAFE International™ Self Defense Mission includes the goal to teach violence-prevention strategies to as many Indigenous People's communities as possible through a self defense experience that is honest, memorable, and effective!

SAFE Defense TFN 2SAFE International™ intends to change the statistics you are about to read below.  We want to ensure that all Indigenous people are free from harm and get home to their families daily, safe and sound. We have implemented a violence prevention/self defense course to help make this possible. SAFE International™ has worked with Timiskaming First Nations and Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg communities in addition to other workshops offered so that the youth, women, and seniors in their communities know how to better protect themselves and we can help you too! Our SAFE International™ philosophy of self-protection is unlike any other which is evident from the fact that we have taught more than 200,000 people since 1994!

But First, Were You Aware That…

In Canada, Indigenous People account for almost one quarter of the victims despite comprising just five per cent of the population.

Rates of almost all types of violent victimization were higher for Indigenous people than for non-Indigenous people. Specifically, the sexual assault rate of Indigenous people was almost three times that of non-Indigenous people, while the physical assault rate of Indigenous people was nearly double that of non-Indigenous people.

In 2014, Indigenous people were more likely than non-Indigenous people to have been a victim of spousal violence in the past five years.

Half of Indigenous victims of spousal violence reported experiencing among the more severe forms of spousal violence, such as having been sexually assaulted, beaten, choked or threatened with a gun or knife. This compares with just under one-quarter of non-Indigenous victims of spousal violence.

Benefits in bringing the SAFE International™ Self Defense Coursekitiganzibi

  • How to effectively communicate to avoid and/or de-escalate conflict
  • Acquire knowledge of practical, effective and memorable self defense skills
  • Increase in confidence to deal with bullying, harassment, or violence
  • Plus Much Much More

Why Choose SAFE International™ for Your Personal Protection Needs?

The benefits are too many to name all of them, but the primary and most important reason is we teach self defense from A to Z.  There is a gross misconception that self defense begins and ends with learning a few physical techniques, but nothing could be further from the truth.  A credible self defense program recognizes and identifies every aspect of potential violence, from its social and antisocial point of view.  This begins with avoidance through prevention via both awareness and a solid understanding of how to avoid making one's self a target.  If awareness fails, then it is imperative to possess the necessary skills to verbally deescalate the confrontation.  If defusing fails and the threat persists or escalates, then every aspecxt of physical self defense is tackled from the ambush to the most common attacks and their defenses.

This is not a martial arts class, MMA or fighting course.  Self defense is not a "system" or "style" of fighting; it is a legal term that states (in North America) you have the moral, legal and ethical right to terminate a threat within the parameters of the law.  First and foremost, self defense is about going home safely, it isn't about winning or losing, trophies, who started it, justice, revenge, teaching someone a lesson, NO, it's about avoiding confrontation and going home safely.

Testimonials

I took the facilitator training with SAFE International for many different reasons.  Personally, it has given me a lot of very essential prevention education and the simulated training was very eye opening in the way that any previous training I had taken proved to not work!!! Ha ha, I didn't need to try to recall the fancy ineffective techniques.  The way that SAFE International trains you is "natural" it is easily recalled in situations where your personal safety is on the line.  Professionally this training keeps me aware when going out on home visits in client's homes and now our team can spread the awareness and training to the community members to keep even more people safe.

Thank you SAFE International!

Bobbie Jo Gregorcic, Clinical Supervisor for First Line Services/Mental Wellness Programs

"SAFE International provided us with both effective and highly memorable personal protection instruction through their unique ability to reach people in a way that enables them to retain and utilize the skills if necessary.  What distinguishes SAFE International from all other programs is how they present; with real-life simulated scenarios, with hands-on techniques and humour.  While the subject is a very serious one, Chris understands that learning in a safe, fun and enthusiastic environment is the best way to retain what is being presented."

Dan Lavigne, Social Programs Supervisor

"SAFE International is my first ever self defense training.  From what I've heard from my co-workers, it is the best self defense training they've received.  I enjoyed the fact that the verbal part was the component that was stressed upon most.  I absolutely loved howt he course was taught, and Chris has my full attention at all times.  I would definitely recommend this specific defense training to all of my family members!"

Candace Polson, Social Activities Coordinator

"Self defense training with SAFE International was an awesome and pleasant experience.  I really appreciate that the program they teach includes awareness and techniques to diffuse a potential attack,  but if I were unsuccessful at diffusing the situation I'm confident that the self defense techniques I learned are effective, easy to remember, easy to execute and could potentially save my life.  Thank You!"

Jennifer Bourdon, FLS Social Worker

Bullying

Bullying is a form of targeted antisocial behaviour that can cause serious and long-lasting harm to a victim while creating positive social, psychological and material rewards for a bully.

bully1While a lot of energy and focus has gone into raising awareness about the issue of bullying in recent years, more work needs to be done at the individual level to address the root causes and affect behavioural change. This work is best carried out one-on-one or in small groups where individual and social dynamics can be addressed specifically and tailored solutions can be developed. The roots of bullying are varied. If individual causes are left unaddressed in children and youth, those who are bullied are likely to re-experience victimization even after a school change or a move and as they enter the workforce. As well, those who bully are likely to carry the behaviour into adulthood where the methods through which this happens become more sophisticated and difficult to detect and remedy.

SAFE International’s Bullying Curriculum takes this into account and is designed to address the underlying influences of bullying both individually and within social dynamics, where environments of reward for bullies and isolation for victims are often co-created by others unintentionally. While the course is framed within the context of self-defense and personal protection, physical skills are a small portion of the self-defense paradigm as a solution for violence. Safe International’s bullying curriculum tackles a wide range of factors:

  • how to identify bullyingbully
  • addressing behavioural, psychological and emotional links to bullying and victimization
  • training violence prevention and de-escalation of aggressive behaviour
  • myth-busting ineffective strategies for dealing with antisocial violence and behaviours including bullying
  • building effective interpersonal skills
  • legal, moral and ethical approaches to self-protection
  • addressing the social context of bullying
  • supporting support systems with credible information and skills
  • tailoring our approach when possible to specific bullying cases within the learning environment

Each year, SAFE International™ reaches more than 10,000 high school students with evidence-backed information and effective skills for preventing violence, protecting themselves and others, and using a legal, moral and ethical approach to safety. The bullying curriculum can be integrated into in-class high school self-defense instruction, or delivered in depth as a standalone program.

The program is also designed to address bullying throughout various stages of life in a variety of environments including at work, at home and online. A tailored program can be developed from our core curriculum to address individual cases and we encourage this approach when possible.

Supporting Victims

bully2The effects of bullying on victims are varied and include mental health consequences like depression, suicide, drug and alcohol use and dependency, loss of purpose in life, social withdrawal, negative impacts on school or work performance, and isolation from relationships or groups that otherwise support wellbeing and positive development.  It is a myth that being bullied will toughen someone up over time.

SAFE International’s approach to supporting victims includes:

  • building confidence and resiliency
  • teaching new skills and strategies to deal with bullies effectively from a legal, ethical and moral perspective
  • supporting support systems with credible information and effective skills

Supporting Learning and Positive Growth in Bullies

Research about why bullies do what they do suggests a variety of causes ranging from abuse at home; mental health issues; aggressive predispositions; learned behaviours; or simply aggressive approaches to self-reward either via gained self-esteem, peer esteem, and/or material gain.

Regardless of cause, SAFE International™ believes that effectively addressing bullying behaviour requires an empathetic approach:

  • not singling out bullies in a group setting
  • demystifying the difference between social and antisocial violence and behaviour
  • including a bully in a positive group dynamic that enables self-reflection on aggressive and violent behaviours, the roots of these behaviours, and pathways for positive change

Creating Safe Environments

There are many actors, factors and environments that contribute to bullying in cause and also in remedy. School and workplace policies, peer actions or inactions, anti-violence paradigms of thought or belief, and socially co-created systems of isolation and reward all affect the dynamics of bullying.

Our approach includes sharing credible information that empowers and enables people to co-create Safe environments.

Bullying — Today’s Reality

Bullying is typically defined as physical intimidation or fighting, starting and/or spreading rumours, shaming publicly, insults through name calling, teasing, and other aggressive behaviour.  Despite an increase of public attention on the issue of bullying in recent years, it remains a significant and rampant health and safety issue around the world and is proliferated with the usage of social media and connected technologies.

  • In Canada, one in three adolescent students report having been bullied recently. [1]
  • More than 50% of children who have been bullied online do not tell their parents about it.[2]
  • 47% of Canadian parents report having a child victim of bullying.[3]
  • In 2011, one million children were harassed, threatened, or subjected to other forms of cyberbullying on Facebook.[4]
  • Forty percent of Canadian workers experience bullying on a weekly basis.[5]
  • 7% of adult Internet users in Canada, age 18 years and older, self-reported having been a victim of cyber-bullying at some point in their life.7
